How to stitch stars

Stars are so useful for adding decoration to designs, especially Christmas ones.  So as a little bonus I’ve added embroidery stitch instructions on how to stitch a star.

You can make stars out of straight stitches, either with 8 points or 5 points. The ones shown on the outside edge of one of the shapes on my learn embroidery kit have 8 points:

The 5 point stars below are scattered in between the shapes on my learn embroidery kit. They are also formed from straight stitches but they don't go through the centre of star like the 8 point stars do.

8 points

How to do straight stitch on an 8 point star
  • Bring the needle up at 1, back down at 2, back up at 3 and so on until you have completed the star.

5 points

  • Bring needle up at 1 and down at 2, then bring needle up at 3 and down at 4.
  • Bring needle up at 5 and down at 1, then bring needle up at 2 and down at 3.
  • Finish by bringing needle up at 5 and down at 4.

It doesn't really matter which order you do the stitches in as you'll soon see how the points of the star are formed.
